Equine Mortality Questionnaire
Trainers Liability / Stable Liability Questionnaire
Farm Owners / Stable Liability Questionnaire
Please Note: If you would like to insure your horse at a value higher than the purchase price, substantiation of value will be required i.e.: current competition and training records. Approval of an increased insured value is at the sole discretion of the underwriter.
Horses with an insured value above $100,000 will require a veterinary certificate.
Which Questionnaire Should You Complete?
Choosing the right form at the start saves a round of back-and-forth later. As a general guide:
- Equine Mortality Questionnaire — for insuring an individual horse against death from natural or accidental causes, and for adding Major Medical, Surgical or Loss of Use endorsements. Use this if the horse, rather than the property or the business, is what you are protecting.
- Trainers Liability / Stable Liability Questionnaire — for training and boarding operations that handle horses belonging to other people, where Equine Commercial Liability and Care, Custody & Control are the central coverages.
- Farm Owners / Stable Liability Questionnaire — for insuring the property itself: the residence, barns, structures, tack, equipment and vehicles, together with the liability arising from the operation run there.
If your situation spans more than one of these — which is common for anyone who owns horses and runs a facility — complete the forms that apply and we will bring the programme together.
Information to Have Ready
Quotes are built from detail, so gathering the relevant information first will make the process considerably quicker. What you need depends on the type of insurance:
- Mortality policies: your horse’s age, breed, use and value.
- Liability policies: the number of horses in each type of exposure — how many boarded, how many in training, how many school horses, how many students — and usually the receipts generated for each exposure.
- Farm policies: a list of dwellings, barns and other structures, with type of construction, age, square footage, and roof type and age. Also a list of tractors, tack, tools and other equipment; year, make, model and serial numbers are needed for equipment, though usually not simply to obtain a quote. Liability information is submitted alongside.
- Auto policies: a list of vehicles and VINs, the limits and deductibles you want, and a list of drivers with license details and dates of birth.
One principle applies throughout: if it is not listed on the policy, it is not covered. It is worth being thorough at quote stage rather than discovering an omission at claim time.
How Premium Is Determined
The cost of insuring a horse varies because it depends on a number of factors — age, breed, use and value being the primary ones. There is no standard rate, which is precisely why the questionnaire asks what it asks. Once we have those details, we work to find you the best coverage at the best price for your circumstances.
Eligibility is assessed at the same time. A horse can be insured for mortality from as early as 24 hours old and generally up to 20 years of age, while Major Medical and other endorsements usually become available from around 30 days, with the minimum varying by carrier. A horse with a colic history can often still be insured depending on the type of colic and the number of episodes, and a horse that has had colic surgery may qualify provided there was no bowel resection and no repeated episodes, though exclusions may apply.
After You Submit
Once your questionnaire is received, an agent will review it and come back to you with options. To bind mortality coverage you will need a completed application together with a signed Statement of Health, and where the insured value exceeds the carrier’s threshold — commonly $100,000 — a veterinary examination and certificate will be required. The policy becomes effective only once the application and the veterinary documentation have been received and approved by the appointed underwriters, so submitting complete paperwork is what determines how quickly cover can start.
The forms you will need are available on our forms and links page, and our frequently asked questions answer the queries that come up most often about values, claims and renewals. If you are still deciding which coverages apply to you, start with our policies overview.
